How to Apply for an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) in 2026

Overview of the Student Visa
The Student Visa (subclass 500) is your gateway to studying in Australia. It covers all education sectors including primary school, high school, VET/TAFE, English language courses (ELICOS), and university (undergraduate and postgraduate). Australia is the third most popular study destination in the world, with over 600,000 international students.
Step 1: Choose Your Course and Institution
Your course must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Research institutions that offer your desired course, compare tuition fees, and consider location, reputation, and post-study employment outcomes. You'll need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your chosen institution before applying for the visa.
Step 2: Meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement
You must demonstrate that you genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily for study purposes. The Department considers your circumstances in your home country, potential circumstances in Australia, the value of the course to your future, your immigration history, and any other relevant matters. A well-written personal statement explaining your study plans and career goals is important.
Step 3: Financial Requirements
You must demonstrate sufficient funds for tuition fees (first year), living costs ($24,505/year for you), travel costs, and school costs for any dependent children ($8,296/year). You can demonstrate funds through personal savings, financial support from family, scholarships, or government sponsorship. Bank statements should show the funds have been held for a reasonable period.
Work Rights on a Student Visa
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. This is a significant benefit — many students use work income to support their studies and gain Australian work experience. Your dependents (partner) can also work, with conditions depending on your course level.
Pathways After Study
Completing Australian studies can open pathways to permanent residency. The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows you to work in Australia for 2–4 years after graduation. During this time, you can gain work experience that helps with skilled visa points (189/190/491) or find an employer willing to sponsor you (482/186). Australian qualifications also receive extra points on the skilled migration points test.
