Australian Skilled Migration Points Calculator: How to Calculate Your Score (2026)
Published 2026-02-14
How Does the Points Test Work?
The Australian skilled migration points test is used for subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), 190 (Skilled Nominated), and 491 (Skilled Work Regional) visas. You must score a minimum of 65 points to be eligible, but the minimum is rarely enough to receive an invitation — competitive scores in 2026 typically range from 80 to 95+ depending on your occupation. Points are calculated at the time you are invited to apply, so plan ahead to maximise your score. Visit our /visa/skilled-independent-visa/ page for full details on the 189 pathway.
Age Points (Maximum 30)
Your age at the time of invitation determines your age points: 18-24 years (25 points), 25-32 years (30 points), 33-39 years (25 points), 40-44 years (15 points), 45-49 years (0 points). Applicants aged 50 or over are not eligible for the points-tested skilled visas. The 25-32 age bracket receives the maximum 30 points, making this the optimal age range for skilled migration.
English Language Points (Maximum 20)
English proficiency is tested through IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. Competent English — IELTS 6.0 each band / PTE 50 each (0 points, but required minimum). Proficient English — IELTS 7.0 each band / PTE 65 each (10 points). Superior English — IELTS 8.0 each band / PTE 79 each (20 points). Investing in English preparation to reach Superior level is one of the most effective ways to boost your points score, adding 20 points to your total.
Work Experience Points (Maximum 20)
Points for skilled employment in your nominated occupation: Overseas experience — 3 years (5 points), 5 years (10 points), 8 years (15 points). Australian experience — 1 year (5 points), 3 years (10 points), 5 years (15 points), 8 years (20 points). Australian work experience is valued more highly. You can claim points for both overseas and Australian experience, but the combined maximum is 20 points. Experience must be in your nominated skilled occupation and verified by your skills assessing authority.
Education Points (Maximum 20)
Points are awarded for your highest qualification: Doctorate (PhD) from an Australian institution or recognised overseas institution (20 points), Bachelor degree or Masters (15 points), Diploma or trade qualification (10 points), recognised qualification or award (10 points). Australian study requirement — completing 2 academic years (92 weeks) of study in Australia in a CRICOS-registered course adds 5 bonus points. Studying in regional Australia adds a further 5 points.
Other Points Categories
Additional points can be claimed for: State/territory nomination — 190 visa (5 points) or 491 visa (15 points). Partner skills — if your partner also meets skills, age, and English requirements (5-10 points). Single applicant or partner is Australian citizen/PR (10 points). Professional Year in Australia (5 points, available for accounting, IT, and engineering). Specialist education — Masters by research or PhD in STEM field at an Australian institution (10 points). Community language — NAATI-accredited translator/interpreter credential (5 points).
What Score Do You Need in 2026?
